The Meaning Behind The Song: “Ad Majorem dei Gloriam” by Returning We Hear the Larks

As a Music Technician, I am always fascinated by the stories and meanings behind the songs that resonate with me. One such song that has deeply touched me is “Ad Majorem dei Gloriam” by Returning We Hear the Larks. The profound lyrics and haunting melody encapsulate the horrors of war and the manipulation of young soldiers, urging them to fight for their country.

I first heard this song on a rainy afternoon while browsing through my friend’s music collection. The melancholic tune and piercing vocals immediately caught my attention. I was captivated by the raw emotions conveyed through every word and note, and I knew that there was a deeper story behind this song.

Upon further research, I discovered that “Ad Majorem dei Gloriam” is the third track and second full song on Returning We Hear the Larks’ 2017 EP, “Ypres Incarnate.” The EP is a revisiting of old songs originally intended for the band’s debut album, “Ypres.” Interestingly, “Ad Majorem” was written in its entirety in 2009 but was not included in the final tracklist for “Ypres” due to a change in the album’s musical direction.

Prior to “Ypres Incarnate,” Returning We Hear the Larks was an instrumental project. However, for this EP, lyrics were added to “Ad Majorem,” giving the song an even more poignant narrative. The lyrics depict a grim reality – young soldiers being pressured into fighting for their god and country, while those in power remain untouched by the horrors of war.

The phrase “Ad Majorem dei Gloriam” translates to “To the greater glory of God” and is inscribed on the Menin Gate in Belgium. It was during a visit to the sites of World War I in 2008 that Jack Noble, the creative force behind Returning We Hear the Larks, first encountered this phrase. Inspired by the historical significance and the emotions it evoked, Noble incorporated it into the title of this powerful song.

Listening to “Ad Majorem dei Gloriam,” I am transported to the trenches of World War I, feeling the anguish and sacrifice of those who fought. The intense and haunting vocals coupled with the heavy instrumentation create a sense of urgency and desperation. It serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of war and the manipulation of young lives in its pursuit.

“Ad Majorem” is a haunting tribute to those who lost their lives in the war, their memories forever engraved on the pages of history. The lyrics question the morality of inhumane acts committed during times of conflict and shed light on the disparity between those who suffer and those who remain unaffected.

As I reflect on this song, I am reminded of the true power of music to convey complex emotions and tell stories that demand to be heard. “Ad Majorem dei Gloriam” by Returning We Hear the Larks continues to inspire and move me with its profound lyrics and haunting melody, forever reminding us of the importance of acknowledging the sacrifices made by those who came before us.
